waterworks...


woah, it's hot! 103 boiling hot degrees in NYC..
i have found my weather, now where's my water?

 it's the high tide of the water debate not that i am an authority mind you but i am dabbling in all the confusion swirling around this essential liquid life that most of us including myself, don't drink nearly enough of.

i have had to surrender to the toilette as an hourly ritual while drowning in the prescribed 8 -10 glasses of water a day not to mention my nocturnal habit of sleep interruptus to manage the tank levels. this alone has dampened my efforts countless times but now, i must simply acquiesce.

the dehydrated person, like a dry plant will lose water faster until they begin to hydrate on a cellular level, not an overnight sensation unfortunately.. but gradually over time, i am told and am steeped in believing that i will have time for other rooms in my house and other more worldly pursuits. and on another positive note, my bathrooms are taking on a more decorated appeal as i increase the time that i spend there.. it is also terrific that i keep my toilets so squeaky clean. who knew that with a little ( ok, alot ) of elbow grease those calcified water lines wash away! excuse the pun but like the rest of my family, i am becoming terribly anal!

those of us with our own wells have one set of problems and those of you with city/town water have another.. that is where you begin. a water test is important to assess your well water and i think we all know what our local governments do to the water supply.. whatever your issue, ingesting chlorine, flouride, too many minerals, not enough, fecal matter, pharmaceuticals and pesticides is NOT acceptable.
unless you live in pristine parts of the world like the alaskan tundra or isbre, norway, some say the world's purest glacial water, you need to filter your water! the alternative, of course, is bottled water and we also know how counter intuitive that is from a ecological standpoint and poisoning ourselves with bisphenol aka BPA, an endocrine disrupter, is none too wise.

so what is a dehydrated planet to do?

water softeners, water conditioners, water filters, ultra violet water purifiers, reverse osmosis, distillers, ionizers.. the water industry is teeming with choices!

it's much too hot and much too deep a subject to wade through so feel free to become fluent yourselves. this is a highly personal voyage that we each have to embark on based on our individual living situations.

immersed in pure water and an affusion of super foods, you are likely to be baptized brand new so irrigate your mind in this aquatic subject and take the plunge! i am adding an addendum called water wisdom which is forthcoming but in the meantime,  helpful articles to dive into and part 2: super foods below..

the unexamined life

 "the unexamined life is not worth living"  socrates
sounds terribly serious for a short post on the first day of summer..







i for one am delirious with joy today for it is the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, weather and light to really live by!  mother nature is beckoning us to rejoice in her beauty and rising mercury. our gardens are brimming with ripening fruits and vegetables and we are wearing comfortable summer clothes! whatever you are or aren't doing, get outdoors, take off your shoes and/or your summer clothes, gaze up at the warm sun, breathe deeply and be happy to be alive.


'tis but a brief examination of the surface of things.. a DUH kind of approach to what might make some of us brim with excitement but that supposes that all else is in good order. what difference does it make what the weather is doing if we are stressed out or infirm, worrying about the war(s), the oil spill, the economy?
i propose that a wee dose of "self"ishness once in awhile is
mandatory.. especially today.. so whatever it is that you really want to do, start planning it today.. take time for pleasure, what a tonic! life is short! summer is even shorter but today is long!

springing into summer, dash out to your nearest asian market or well stocked health food store and pick up some spring roll skins and gift wrap your favorite greens and veges in an exquisitely, transparent and edible light meal or appetizer. here is my version:

follow package directions for the skins.. don't let them get too wet or they will be difficult to handle.        

and depending on how many you want to make, increase your ingredients to accommodate the amount.

SPRING ROLLS 
                                                           
arugula
napa cabbage                                                            
shredded carrot                                                             
peeled cucumber in strips                                                              
red bell pepper strips                                                           
avocado slices                                                               
sprouts                                                            
                                                           
assemble ingredients in the center of spring roll. fold in sides and roll up being careful not to break through the delicate rice membrane as you roll. it will self seal. they should be about 2 1/2 to 3 inches in diameter.


DIPPING SAUCE                         

1/4 cup maple syrup                                                           
2 t dijon style mustard
2 t rice vinegar                                                          
2 T olive oil
1 T  sesame oil                                                             
1 T minced ginger                                                            
juice from 1/2 juice orange                                                            
1/4 cup fresh lime juice                                                             
1 T braggs amino acids or nama shoyu                                                           
                                                                                                                               
combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl, whisk and serve.

the missing manual

what if when we were born, we came with an instructional manual for optimal performance just like a flat screen TV or a juicer.. has anyone written this important how to guide? do we target children or their parents? yes, both!

since my "rebirth", i have read many excellent books by doctors, scientists, health care professionals,  and assorted gurus on proper nutrition,  exercise and spirituality but mostly, they target the mature, already flagging audience that is fed up or sick and looking for a different approach to wellness. no matter how we have erred at the art of living, we are all born with an innate inner guidance system that, provided we are not insane or on life support, is always poised to be heard and implemented. we just have to learn to listen to it before we are in the grip of disease, depression or debt. this is a very tall order given how most of us come into the world and cycle through our lives. small children are fearless and wise, intuitive and playful.  in most cases they have excellent health and their bodies are not yet traumatized by poor eating habits and psychological damage. they are too immature to actively seek to perpetuate this stream of wellness and then life happens. we want to believe what we are taught, we begin to lose ourselves to the collective wisdom which i propose is down right hazardous to our health.

there is a glut of books on baby care, nutrition,  techniques for insuring well behaved children and even yoga for kids but no where that i can see do we have the "de facto" guide on exactly how the body works and why whole organic living foods are the only way to optimum health well into our twilight years, how to be of service to others instead of self serving, how to manage your money, when to work and when not to, how to be in relationships from sharing your toys to sharing your bed and maybe most importantly, how not to accept blithely, information from authority figures, our government, the medical establishment, the educational system, organized religion and anyone else who is lording over our minds and our futures. yes indeed we need to learn to read and write but all of the aforementioned, essential and practical knowledge is in my opinion, equally significant, no.. critical to the eventual adult that we all, like it or not, become.  if someone really taught this to me when i was a child, i may not have veered off into drug and alcohol use thinking it my right of passage. like drilling for oil, there can be a point of no return and then combustion! ( a blatant barb directed at BP and transocean.. ) our sugar culture is another early childhood trap that together with the advent of baby formula, insures we all become addicted to it the minute the breast is tucked back into it's reinforcements if used at all. our parents unwittingly pass on their fears and learned behaviors. we all know now that our text books are written with selective memory and omission and somehow, despite having brothers and sisters and living among our human family, we grow up thinking only about me, me, me! we are not very skilled in the art of love and relationship. we baby boomers were raised during the advent of epic global divorce .. some of you are probably saying harumph! i am a shining example of brotherly love, charity and wisdom and i have no doubt that some of you are.. thankfully, we have many great and heroic models to exalt and hold up as a testament to humanity but let's face it, most of us need help! do you remember wavy gravy, the 60's clown prince of counter culture.. some say the love child of harpo marx and mother teresa? i am reminded of one of his most revered quips, " we are all bozos on this bus so we might as well sit back and enjoy the ride" this suggests we couldn't possibly take a different approach to our lives so wait out your fate with a smile... hmmm, let's think way outside of this box, shall we? there could be a systematic approach to creating whole, healthy, happy and brilliant little beings one after the other. imagine how our world could change and how long we could live in healthy minds and bodies, a real utopia! i know i am flaunting an idealist view but if we can imagine it, we can manifest it.

so will someone please cull together all the principles of love, life, peace, health, nutrition, service, sacrifice, faith, wisdom and honor and write the damn book already?? if we start now, we could have it ready in time for our children's children. i am willing to tackle the children's book if someone out there can take on the grown ups.. wavy gravy, if your listening,  i know we would pay very close attention to a chapter devoted to your unique and now ripe with age philosophy. everybody's got to get on board the new bus!

heavenly highs

what's a wine swilling, meat eating, sugar addicted, fifty something, single girl to do when she can't play with her best friends any more? this has perhaps been the most challenging part of operation "clean up". who has this kind of discipline? i wasn't raised with discipline after my strict naval father passed away. i was only twelve when he set sail and he scared me so much that it took at least a year to find my stride again.


i got started early with the usual line up of gateway essentials.. cigarettes from france with fancy gold filters, i thought they would get me high if i rerolled them in groovy tatooed rolling papers.. coming of age in the 60's and 70's, this was a perfectly normal assumption. i even tried oregano and dill, spices from mother's kitchen that had that "look alike" quality.  dissatisfied, i moved swiftly on to the real thing. i found myself in woodstock at the tender age of eleven with my best friends gettin' high with their hippie mother, she was my idol! drinking followed shortly thereafter, a natural segue since all of our parents were alcoholics and booz was more plentiful than tap water. in fact at our house, i am pretty sure it did come out of the tap. i liked mine good and sweet, daiquiris were my specialty. i even brought my blender to boarding school and found plenty of occasions to use it. ahh, the good ol' days..

needless to say, my bad habits continued through my teens, into motherhood and beyond. it only took 39 years for my body to devolve into a vortex of system failure. lyme disease didn't do me any favors but if i had taken better care of the temple, the termites may not have gotten a foothold. and i didn't have the best attitude either if you must know.. that mind body connection was severed early on, a birth defect i guess.. i was hard wired for fun first and for me and my tribe, pleasure seeking was a serious way of life.

imagine the indignation of having to part company with my bad habits? by now, i really only had one. SUGAR, which of course included high end oaky chardonnay and big luscious reds, Mmmm. i still salivate when i recall the mouth feel and the heady high but it is now my work, with a vastly improved body, to find more wholesome highs. to my delight and surprise, they are in abundance.

in case any of you need a refresher, here's a partial list:

1. getting up in the am clear headed and refreshed.
2. exercise. i almost forgot how but thankfully, my body did not.
3. life giving and healing food, it's so much better than D.O.A
4. chewing your food. really chewing.
5. performing "hurricane katrina like" evacuations daily
6. having the time and energy to play with your pets.
7. downloading new music from itunes, i have been living in the musical dark ages
8. cleaning my windows..  amazing view, dim visibility
9. SPRINGTIME!
10. barefoot. take off your shoes people! they are cutting us off from earth's energy. if you want a quick jolt of life force, don't delay!
11. discovering that you are a woman still ( or a man ) having sex, more sex, glorious sex!!
12. young thai coconuts
13. divine chocolate mousse, see recipe below...


2 ripe avocados
1/4 cup maple syrup
 a few chopped dates or 1-2 tbls raw sugar
1/4 cup plus 2 tbls raw cacao powder
1-2 teas vanilla
1/3 cup water
2 tbls coconut butter optional ( makes it richer and thicker )
all ingredients can be altered to your preferences

put all ingredients except the cacao into a vita mix or food processor
add cacao when blended
set in fridge or freeze for a really good time!

to be or not to be

is that really the question?

dear hamlet,

to be or not to be is a moot, existential point if your "kool aid" is causing this vexing psychological inquisition. you, kind sir, have enough problems on your hands with murder, ghostly apparitions and madness, real and imagined to be seeking proof of your existence. at least in your century, your poisons were distinctly separate from your balms.. in ours, were told that poison will heal us..

if you grew up anything like me in the 20th century, your parents, through no fault of their own, taught you that doctors and pharmacies are the places we go when we are sick. and like our parents, i passed this along to my own children who thankfully have had little in the way of illness or madness. i would however, characterize it madness to inject their tender hydes with vaccine after vaccine to allegedly protect them from the virulent diseases that hardly exist anymore (hello immune system!) and so begins a lifelong dependency on the good doctor who belies the hippocratic oath with each scribbled scrip and the all important health insurance whose premiums are tantamount to your mortgage payment. but unlike your castle, your monthly offering to the health insurance industry, leaves you out in the cold. peace of mind is an illusion here and the piece of my mind that i would like to share with the medical establishment is that they have just lost another customer. the irony is, that aside from drinking poison or being blindsided by a city bus, i no longer have any use for the soon to be mandated health care system. it doesn't cover my chosen health care program. the drug industry absolutely does not want you to know that healing foods, herbs and whole food supplements would make their pharmaceuticals obsolete. think of the fallen heroes and fortunes lost, it makes me giddy with delight! sucker turned seeker, i crossed over to the other side and the street ( looked both ways ) and found everything an over treated and under nourished person could want at my local health food store.



as is evident in this cartoon,  there are two very different sorts of people who inhabit these places. now that my food is my medicine, i never go to the drug store anymore. which group would you rather belong to? it certainly is telling that we have to spell out the h-e-a-l-t-h  f-o-o-d store to distinguish it from the other variety. remember when the pharmacy was known as the d-r-u-g  s-t-o-r-e? but to make it sound more ambiguous, they renamed it the pharmacy. another salient question might be.. why are chemicals assumed safe until proven dangerous while nutrients and healthy lifestyle choices are assumed useless until proven effective? like hamlet and his ilk, we have really lost our minds but the really, really good news is that one by one, we are awakening to the natural order, healing plants and age old wisdom. we have managed to survive the shakespearian era, the industrial age and so far, global warming and unlike the tragic heroes of literature, our own human failings, greed, ego, power and deception have not yet done us in so let's beg the question before it is too late.. to see or not to see then we can talk about being, our well being that is!

grazing in the grass

one third of the earth's surface is grass. it's a global obsession for many. we grow it, mow it, admire it but not too many of us eat it. history tells us grass has been around long before mankind. there are over 9,000 different species of it. countless animals survive on it yet it wasn't until 1940 that we figured out just how nutritious it was and developed it for human consumption. i must admit, i have always wondered how blades of ordinary grass could possibly sustain so many of the enormous muscle bound animals who graze on it.

i never had a single good reason to try wheatgrass despite knowing about it's long reported health benefits.. i "was" healthy and planned on staying that way and besides, i had heard, in whisper tones, about the way it tasted so it was never going to be on my to do list, ever! i laugh now at how this promise to myself has backfired. and yes, the reports were correct, wheatgrass is cloyingly sweet and can cause the gag reflex. it is not ever going to taste good no matter how you disguise it but since the prescribed daily amount is only 2 oz twice a day, i have yielded to the old adage that medicine is not supposed to taste good and that it's benefits far outweigh it's palatability. don't be fooled by the attractive glass and pretty color!

i can credit wheatgrass, above all else, for returning a homeostasis in my body. it took all of three weeks to notice changes especially to my skin. i unwittingly conducted an experiment that proved wheatgrass was, in fact, a miracle cure. before i started growing it, wheatgrass was often difficult to find and in a short while i would have a return of symptoms. this happened three times until i figured out that it always came on the heels of missing my daily shots.



i have still not mastered the growing process but believe me, i will. i am highly motivated due to the expensive price per oz. at the local health food stores. i am including a rather self aggrandizing photo of one of my more successful batches of grass to impress you. when i can do this with my eyes closed, i will be quite smitten with myself!

i tell you this so that you will consider discarding the panoply of store bought and doctor prescribed cures in your medicine cabinet. wheatgrass is a cure for everything, one size fits all. realistically, i don't expect too many of you to actually take my advice but if i can plant the seed, you might allow it to grow into a healthy solution when next you need one!

food safety bill is anything but...

i am already breaking one of my golden rules about this blog ( see subtitle ) and that is to report only good news. this is so outrageous that i would be remiss if i did not bring it to your attention.

the more i delve into my health, your health, human health the more i learn about the alarmingly low standards and practices in our own government where our safety is concerned. codex ( codex alimentarius committee, meaning food code ) is a global body formed in 1963 to safeguard food standards around the world. sounds like an organization of the highest order until you look more closely.. most people are blissfully unaware to the extent that their activities affect our health. as i write this, codex is attempting to degrade our health freedoms by dispatching a phony food safety bill that in fact, will undermine food labeling in this country and around the world. if you care about the high potency of supplements, gmo ( genetically modified organisms ) labeling and maintaining a high standard of organic foods then please watch these three short videos. rima e. laibow md. medical director of the natural solutions foundation, articulates precisely what will happen if we don't lend our signatures to the petition at the end of this post. please, take a few minutes to review the information and take action! thank you, your children and grand children will thank you too.

and because i don't want to be responsible for being the cause of your outrage, here is a great salad dressing ( vitriol free ) BTW, vinegar mixed with food actually impedes digestion but taken alone, apple cider vinegar, in particular, has long been, a great tonic for many health conditions. weight loss, diabetes, and balancing the PH to name a few..

lemon tahini dressing

3/4 - 1 cup of high quality olive oil ( i use 3/4 )
the juice of one lemon
2 tbs. braggs amino acids, nama shoya, or tamari
2 tbs tahini ( optional )*
1/4 ts. cayenne pepper
2 tbs water, more if a thinner dressing is preferred
2 big garlic cloves
2 tsp ground mustard seed ( optional )*

in a blender, combine all ingredients except the oil
when blended add oil in a slow drizzle until well blended
adjust seasoning to taste add sea salt if necessary

* everyone has slightly different preferences.. i like the tahini better than the mustard seed. enjoy!

proverbally yours..

the world is full of chattering voices, in and outside our heads.. some wise and inspiring and others, banal or injurious. i am learning to tune out the vast majority, including my own, that no longer serve me. just filtering is a daily grind but it is getting noticeably freer of debris. even while i pen this, i realize the futility of wondering what took so long. i used to feel older not wiser, watch out for that one! but we are here now hopefully in relative sound mind and body to do the work we haven't done and to soldier on toward our best lives. we will never get it done no matter how hard we work or how long we live. this, of course, frees us up to forget the past, disregard the future, lose the stress and guilt of everything and just do our best and have fun.. how refreshing!! despite having been a student of therapy and self help for twenty years and while there have been crises averted and lessons learned, it doesn't much matter if life continues to be an uphill struggle. buddhist proverb #1 "when the student is ready, the teacher appears." my last and most important teacher came in the form of rotten health and this is my path forward. proverb #2 "if we are facing in the right direction, all we have to do is keep walking." now that i can walk again, i'm hoping for enlightenment but failing that, wicked smart, gifted and super healthy will do.

as a simple student of new habits, the buddha and the blogosphere, i am actually beginning to feel much younger than my fifty years in the way that learning makes you feel, anticipatory, engaged and confident. proverb #3 "wherever you go, there you are." this may not seem like much at first glance but the security of knowing your in good hands, your own, is priceless! i am not staging any more dramas in this lifetime nor am i expecting a sudden mutiny or an early demise but just to be on the safe side.. proverb #4 "when the tree falls and the monkeys scatter," you don't have to take it personally. i do not claim to have mastered anything but the journey is definitely shaping up! i don't feel like i need as much baggage anymore, my goal is to fit it all in the overhead compartment. the more i have stored in my infinite wisdom, the less i need to show for it.

and just one more thing.. as aging is inevitable, the premature variety is not.. www.realage.com thanks to new food and good information, which is all forth coming, i am currently getting younger. although the outside has not caught up to the inside job that i am working on, later this year, i will be celebrating my 50th again. no fanfare necessary. hmm, on second thought.. maybe an annie leibowitz photo shoot, she needs work right? and if all else fails, i can always fall back on yet another proverb, "the older the ginger, the hotter the spice."

seedy, nutty, rawnchy fun

RAWNCHY: raw and crunchy..

i have gone nuts for nuts and seeds! they were always a perfect and healthy "snack". i recall fondly my granola habit formed in my early teens but it reached epic proportions when i discovered ga's granola.. heavenly! sadly, i can no longer feast on it but sans the oatmeal and honey, nuts and seeds dominate the non vegetable part of my diet. they are my milk, bread, cracker, crust, meat, cheese, pate and snack. it is amazing what you can do with nuts! the raw food world has rediscovered these little edible marvels and made them into every conceivable delicacy, sweet and savory. the problem with nuts and seeds is that in nature, they develop enzyme inhibitors to protect them from foraging animals so that they can grow to maturity undisturbed. this revolutionary evolution also makes them rather indigestible for humans.

perhaps a brief nutrition provision is needed here. enzymes are the life force in all living foods (exogenous) and in your own body (endogenous). in raw food, they aid in digestion and deliver their life force/nutrition to the consumer. once food is cooked above 118 degrees, all enzymes begin to break down and your body is forced to activate enzymes from other areas like your organs to do the job. digestive enzymes made in the pancreas are utilized but the pancreas can become overtaxed if you eat mostly cooked food. unfortunately, we are all born with a finite amount of enzymes and they say by the time we are fifty, we are lucky if we have 30 percent left. if you can maximize this principle, you can maximize your health, reverse illness and lengthen your life. edward howell, the pioneer of enzyme research, says it all in his book,  www.amazon.com/enzyme-nutrition-dr-edward-howell/dp/0895292211 but i digress..

soaking nuts and seeds overnight will eliminate this problem. you now have a hydrated nut which can be made into the most delicious milk ( in a blender called the vita-mix www.vitamix.com) you will never go back to the dairy case or the boxed nut and seed milks. depending on the recipe, you will use the nut in it's soaked form or to restore the crunch, dehydrating will be necessary. www.excaliburdehydrator.com i know, i know, this is time consuming but so is being sick so i'll opt for time in my kitchen over the doctor's office any day! remember this is a "lifestyle" so beliefs and habits have to be gently redirected! here's a few simple recipes from hippocrates ( see links ) salt and sugar is always left out of their recipes. if needed, use only sea salt, raw honey or stevia. CAUTION: USING AGAVE IS TANTAMOUNT TO USING HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP... they have built quite a campaign and market by touting it's health benefits and low glycemic index..RUBBISH!

ALMOND MILK

1 cup soaked almonds
2 to 3 cups water

blend ingredients well in a vita mix. strain through a nut bag or fine mesh strainer. drink up or refrigerate ( will last only a few days ) you can add any other flavorings ie. vanilla, cinnamon, cardamom etc.

WALNUT TACOS

3 cups walnuts, soaked and dehydrated
2 garlic cloves
2 tbs chili powder ( buy fresh if you are unsure about how long it has been in you spice cabinet!)
1/4 tsp cayenne
2 tsp braggs liquid aminos

in a food processor, combine all ingredients. pulse until desired texture, season to taste. makes 2 cups..

FOR TACO

use a collard green leaf, add walnut meat and salsa or any desired toppings (avocado, shredded carrot, fennel etc ) fold or roll and serve

RED PEPPER CORN SALSA

2 cups diced red pepper
1/2 red onion, diced
1 cup fresh corn
1/2 cup chopped cilantro
cayenne to taste
1 1/2 tbs lemon juice
1 tbs olive oil

combine all ingredients in a bowl
season to taste
let stand 30 min before serving

hot date, cold storage

grocery shopping has brought a new thrill to my life. it is an event that i look forward to. i dress nicely, i am discerning, it feels indulgent and way more interesting than any romantic possibilities . i swing between two lovers, one pedestrian, the other high falutin'. as a matter of fact, in life as in grocery shopping, i have always been drawn to both, maybe this is the reason why i remain so utterly single. mother earth, on one hand, conjures up an exotic, back to nature, organic vibe while robbing you blind ($8 for a bunch of asparagus and it's in season!) and adams is crowded, local, more family oriented and i am always pleased by the relative affordability of their produce. problem is it's mostly NOT organic especially in the winter/spring so i do both for goodness sake. stop and shop, hannaford and all other corporate mega stores leave me cold, ice cold.. there is literally nothing in their vast, overly air conditioned, flourescent lit, square footage that i can have anymore ( praise the lord).

once home, i have long forgotten about the cost of my food. my sherpa is awol but i am just so darn excited to have such an embarrassment of provisions, i hardly notice. i feel abundantly rich! i schlep my weekly haul up to my handsome, cherry clad, modern kitchen and then i am faced with where to store this veritable avalanche of living food.. my cabinets are now filled to the brim with nuts, seeds, beans, water.. bulk. my subzero used to be more than ample but now groans under the weight of nature's bounty. and that space hogging kale and cabbage, bags of stored wheatgrass and sprouts..

what's a neophyte vegan to do? then i am suddenly struck with an opportunity to redecorate, a favorite, frequently occurring pastime.. i have two bosch double ovens, a radioactive microwave ( what was i thinking? ) and a viking stove top that has suddenly presented a solution, more storage!! the toaster is in the microwave to make room for the dehydrator, my wheatgrass supplies are in one oven and my spiralizer in the other. the stove top can be covered with butcher block to accommodate my cuisinart, vitamix and juicer, brilliant! my wheatgrass trays are blocking the door to the summer deck but i think they'll look fabulous as floral arrangements around the house.

whew, problem solved, peace restored. maybe i could sell these expensive appliances to spend more time with my uptown lover..

public seeking

i've been encouraged to write but i don't want to be a part of the polluted literary landscape, that is writing and saying nothing or not saying it well. i am sure i am not alone in this paranoia but being fifty gives me license to face my fears and/or not care what you think so here goes.. my first chapter.. i am not one for the spotlight, and like lyme disease, public speaking makes my central nervous system short circuit but i think this format will avoid any snafu's and allow me to share topics that might be mildly interesting or mind blowing depending on who you are. i am going to write about life, art and health ( LAH ) i quite like the acronym ( better than HAL ) it's a rainy sunday in april, my taxes are paid, my house is clean and my dog is fed so i thought this is as good a time as any to begin and BTW, i don't use capitols except for emphasis so despite being well educated, i choose not to be grammatically correct 'cause i'm lazy around this..

as many of you know, i have been sick with lyme disease for awhile now. yes, i am sick and tired of being sick and tired and it doesn't stop there. to further degrade your life, you stop going out, you become a broken record, your friends stop calling and well, life stops being fun. pain is the order of every day and all decisions revolve around this right down to getting the mail.. too far to walk, it can wait, nothing is as important as MY PAIN!! my sad little pug, feng had to suffer right along with me, no one to play with or walk him around the block. so that's enough, you get the idea.. this is not what i want to talk about! anyone who even remotely relates to this, listen up because as i write this i no longer describe my life this way. my dog is happy again and it only took 15 years to spiral down and three weeks to turn it around. regardless of what your health issue is, the healing potential within your body is the news here and if it were not for a good friend who casually mentioned this health institute over dinner one night, i may still be crying the blues! ( thank you jane )



i was so ready for help, not the kind of help that hurts.. well meaning doctors who chase every illness with their panoply of pharmaceuticals. i am giving at least one of my doctors the benefit of the doubt here because i liked him so much. but honestly, i am not so sure they are not all card carrying members of the evil empire ( big pharma ) not really interested in our health but rather their h(w)ealth. i would not want to live in a world without doctors and hospitals. diagnostics, life saving surgeries and drug related interventions are critical but when it comes to curing an illness, you are knocking on the wrong doors my friends. we have all lost our common sense and forgotten healing traditions that served our ancestors long before the advent of modern medicine. the very idea that a synthetic substance ( a pill ) can return you to good health is absurd when that pill is nothing but chemical compounds manufactured in a lab. aka, a drug, ya know.. not unlike the illegal ones. mother nature made us and mother nature heals us, period. and just for a second opinion.. "FOOD is our medicine and medicine is our FOOD." hippocrates ( ca. 460 bc - ca. 370 bc )

so while many of you may already know this, i didn't until i checked in to the hippocrates health institute in sunny fla. on january 24th 2010 www.hippocrateshealthinst.org their program is called the life change program and it does exactly that! in three weeks, my health had improved dramatically and i received an education that opened my eyes to the tenets of real healing, the politics of health and medicine in this country and exposure to a community of really sick people that all began to heal regardless of what their disease was. i cannot unring this bell! since i have been back, i have quickly realized for whom the bell tolls.. the changes that i have made threatens the way others live their life and are not interested or ready to change theirs. i say fine to that but then where o where do i share this amazing information? hence, this blog. so in the privacy of your own home or office you can quietly tune out now or keep listening. spare me the ahems, the foot shifting and sudden trips to the bathroom, i get it. i don't want to make anyone uncomfortable, i seek only to enlighten. my ego is firmly in check, i am just the messenger here.. all of the information that i will share is disseminated from my hip(pocrates) education and armchair research and will include from time to time, very tasty recipes if anyone wants to take on a little "uncooking" in their spare time.

oh, did i mention that i eat mainly raw food? 80/20 (raw/cooked) for two years to have optimum cell turnover to cure my lyme and anything else that ails me. i have given up happily, meat and dairy. what a scam that is! why didn't i know? well now i do, the short answer is: meat causes cancer, dairy is liquid meat, never mind about the cruelty to animals and the filthy conditions they live in. there is so much protein in plants! if that is your reason for eating meat, it's not a good one. why do 99 percent of all animals on earth eat grass and vegetation? because they know something we have long forgotten. take a look at buffalo, bison, ox, elephants, giraffe, and horses just to name a few if you want to see muscle bound animals that weigh thousands of pounds thriving domestically and in the wild on plants. no more sugar either, my personal addiction. not even fruit. i will be hard pressed to pass on blueberries this summer and peaches this fall. maybe for an occasional treat?(she muses...) sugar feeds disease, all bacteria thrive on it so if you want more of what you got, keep eating sugar. in fact one of the tests for cancer is a pet scan that injects glucose into the body to find cancer. how? by letting the cancer find it. raw garlic has the opposite effect, the more you eat the more bacteria and parasites you kill. let me take this opportunity to ask your forgiveness for what may offend some of you if we should ever meet, garlic breath!! i do hope this is a small price to pay for having such a healthy friend! so i am literally waging a war inside my body against what i have learned is my enemy, bacteria! i will address the use of antibiotics in another post.. for now, just suffice it to say that this cure put me in the hospital twice so regardless of what i know now, back then, i knew this was not the answer! i have truly found my answer and am so grateful for it.

i love art, it has been my passion for a very long time but i am not making it much anymore because i use toxic chemicals in my process. i am sure i will always love art, i will speak of it often and maybe i will find a way to be creative safely but in the meantime, i give you health! some of you don't need it but it can't hurt to hear this in the event that god forbid, you lose your health like me or want to take a preventative approach. i could have saved alot of time and money if i was aware of just how brilliantly wise our bodies are given the right kind of medicine in the form of nourishment to stave off disease and bring optimum results. one has to look no further than their own vegetable garden, local farmer's market or health food store. it is so simple once you have the right information and ingredients. this is an attempt to bring that information to you. hey, if everybody does their part, we'll have a faster delivery system! simple in theory but somewhat more complicated in practice. while i set up my new kitchen, learn how to prepare my food, bring forth the discipline to go out to eat while staying within the boundaries of my diet, not alienate my friends, get well and still have fun, i hope you will keep me company along the way! ole!!
